VitaNest

VitaNest Logo
Bridging advanced technology
& elderly accessibility

VitaNest is designed to help elderly individuals stay physically active, mentally sharp, and safe using a simple and accessible technological system. Our mission is to bridge the gap between advanced technology and elderly accessibility by providing a platform that combines artificial intelligence, cognitive training, safety monitoring, and healthcare support in one easy-to-use ecosystem.

Problems & Solutions

How VitaNest responds to barriers older adults face every day

Problem 1: Cognitive Decline and Memory Loss

According to the World Health Organization, millions of seniors worldwide suffer from dementia[1]. This often affects their ability to concentrate and remember certain details, which makes it difficult for them to recall routines like taking medication or doing daily exercises.

Solution 1: Brain Gym and Literacy Timer

  • Mental Activity: Brain Gym provides memory games and arithmetic quizzes to maintain cognitive health.
  • Reading Engagement: Literacy Timer uses face recognition to ensure users stay focused while reading.
  • Gamified Stimulation: Promotes active mental stimulation through an engaging, interactive platform.[5]

Problem 2: Physical Decline and Fall Risk

As people age, muscle strength, balance, and coordination often decline. In fact, research shows that many adults over 65 experience falls annually, which often leads to bruises, wounds, and trauma[2].

Solution 2: AI Movement Games

  • Gamified Exercise: Uses AI to transform physical activity into fun, interactive games that encourage movement.
  • Pose Recognition: Games like AeroFlap and Penguin Rush detect movements such as standing and squatting.
  • Health Maintenance: Makes training enjoyable, helping to maintain the physical health of elderly users.[3][4]

Problem 3: Medication and Daily Care Difficulties

Many seniors need medication and daily reminders to maintain their lifestyle, but declining memory can make this difficult. Forgetting medication, meals, or hydration is common and may threaten their independence.

Solution 3: Smart Medication Dispenser

  • Smart Dispenser: An Arduino Uno-powered system that automatically rotates to dispense the required pill.
  • Visual Reminders: Displays medication alerts clearly on an integrated LCD screen.
  • Daily Routine Support: Provides additional notifications for hydration and meals to help users maintain healthy habits.

Problem 4: Emergencies and Limited Assistance

It may be difficult for elderly individuals to call for help during emergency situations, such as falls or sudden health problems. This often leads to severe injuries that could otherwise have been treated if help had arrived on time.

Solution 4: Emergency Sign AI

  • AI Emergency Detection: Uses machine learning to recognize specific hand signals for help.
  • Automated Alerts: Activates loud sounds and visual cues to attract assistance when an emergency signal is detected.
  • Safety & Peace of Mind: Ensures elderly users remain secure, even when alone or unable to reach their phone.

Why We Chose This Theme

  • The elderly population is rapidly increasing, creating a growing need for solutions that support health, independence, and wellness.
  • Seniors deserve tools that support independence and healthy living.
  • We believe technology should be accesible to every generation.
  • Al can help create simple, inclusive wellness solutions.
  • For this reason, we chose the theme "Tech for Wellness, Equity for All."

Why VitaNest Stands Out

A smarter and more accessible approach to elderly wellness

Unique Selling Point

  • All-in-One Ecosystem: Combines AI exercise games, cognitive training, emergency detection, smart medication support, and daily wellness reminders.
  • Senior-Centric Design: Tailored specifically for elderly users, focusing on prevention, accessibility, and engagement.
  • Gamified Health: Powered by PictoBlox, machine learning, and Arduino hardware, moving beyond traditional, static healthcare apps.

Existing Solutions vs VitaNest

  • Integrated vs. Fragmented: Most solutions target a single issue (like fitness or medication). VitaNest unifies all essential features into one affordable platform.
  • Interactive Technology: Actively uses gesture recognition, pose detection, and interactive games instead of passive tracking.
  • Promotes Independence: Specifically engineered to support senior accessibility and independent living.

The VitaNest Ecosystem

An all-in-one platform for physical, cognitive, and healthcare support

AeroFlap is a game where standing flies up and squatting descends. Penguin Rush improves reaction time by making the user squat to run and stand to jump. These computer-vision games strengthen leg muscles, balance, and coordination to prevent falls.
Includes a Memory Sequence Game to strengthen short-term memory and a Math Quiz to improve logical thinking. These activities stimulate important cognitive functions to help maintain mental sharpness.
A Pomodoro-style timer combined with face detection that ensures the user is actually present and reading, promoting consistent cognitive engagement and lifelong learning habits.
Trained using PictoBlox to recognize specific help gestures (like an open palm). When detected, it triggers a loud alarm and visual alerts, crucial for seniors unable to speak or reach their phone.
Hardware powered by Arduino Uno, RTC, and stepper motor. It automatically rotates to dispense compartments at scheduled times, with LCD and LED reminders to help elderly users track medication.
The complete VitaNest ecosystem also sends timely alerts for medication, meals, hydration, and daily routines, supporting both medical adherence and daily living activities.

Development Stages

How VitaNest came to life

1

Initiation

Our idea was inspired by the common health issues faced by elderly individuals worldwide. We brainstormed as a team, discussed with our mentor, and identified the main problems that needed solutions.

2

Planning

We spent about a month planning our project. This included setting timelines and learning how to use the features on PictoBlox. We also consulted with our mentor to ensure our idea was achievable within the timeframe.

3

Execution

With our plan, we started developing VitaNest both at school and at KodeKiddo's special classes for Codeavour 7.0. Over two months, we worked on coding the features, and integrating the machine learning for the gesture and pose recognition model.

4

Finalization

Once everything was finalized and working smoothly, we recorded our presentation video and a demonstration to showcase our project before submitting our work to the Codeavour 7.0 submission form.

5

Monitoring and Controlling

During this stage, we tested the program extensively, fixed bugs, optimized the machine learning model, and refined the user experience based on feedback from our mentor and real-world testing with elderly individuals.
